Faces of Frisco ISD: Riddle Teacher Keeps Himself, Others Running

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Faces of Frisco ISD is a monthly feature highlighting some of the untold stories of FISD and the people who make FISD special.

Hamlin Jones of Riddle Elementary, had never run a competitive race in his life until the Gary Burns Fun Run of 2005. But that was the first step into a life-changing adventure.

The Gary Burns is the major fundraiser for Frisco Education Foundation and campuses often bring teams to run in the event. Some campuses take their running more seriously than others. Superintendent Rick Reedy regularly takes employees who beat his time to lunch after the event.

“Mia Bennett (principal of Riddle at the time) said you’ve got to run Gary Burns! I had never run a 5K. But I ran it in 20 minutes and took 20th place,” Jones said.

FISD approves Heritage High School zoning

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

By Ann Marie Shambaugh December 8, 2008

If there’s one issue that makes Frisco ISD Superintendent Rick Reedy toss and turn at night, it’s rezoning. At Monday night’s regular school board meeting, he got to face the issue twice.

Reedy said rezoning is the most difficult issue to handle because a large number of parents weigh in with different opinions about an emotionally-charged issue that affects students for years. In FISD, it’s an issue that must be addressed frequently.

The board approved a rezoning plan for Heritage High School that is slightly different than the plan proposed at last month’s meeting. The new option keeps all areas zoned for Ogle Elementary School at Liberty High School and most of Elliott Elementary at Heritage High School.

Frisco Independent School District Frisco Texas Schools

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Frisco ISD is considered to be among the fastest growing school districts growing by 20 to 30% annually for the past eight years. In 1995 Frisco had just four schools, today we have 29 new schools in development with 18 of those schools currently functioning.

Security

FISD takes security seriously with a number of safety/security systems in place or underway. The security measures implemented for the schools include high resolution cameras in highly traffic areas, security on campus and controlled access.

Low Student/Teacher Ratio

The sizes of the schools in Frisco are intentionally smaller than the national average. Elementary schools are built to educate 700 students, middle schools serve 800 to 1,000 and highschools serve just 1500 to 1800 students. The reason for Frisco’s commitment to smaller teacher/student ratio is to allow teachers and students to form better relationships and to serve the children’s need to be involved in extracurricular activies.

Academics & Test Scores

Frisco continues to raise the standardized test score averages of its students, which are well above state and national averages.

Technology

Computer labs are located in every Frisco School at the ratio of three computers for every student. The computers in the computer labs are replaced every five years and older machines are moved to the back of the classrooms for in-class use. Projectors are also available to teachers as a tool for internet, computer and video streaming.
